Reigning supreme in size and flavour: Medjool organic dates
Everyone has come across dates as wrinkled, dried fruits – but what they don’t know is how much they’re missing out! With 20% water content when harvested, Medjool dates are an authentic fresh fruit, with a juicy, succulent and sweet flavour and texture that melts in the mouth.
Once reserved for Moroccan nobility, and traded as an expensive, sought-after (and delicious) commodity, Medjool dates are still considered to be the most exquisite date variety in existence. They owe this reputation to more than just their size: they have an unbelievably succulent flesh and a full, round sweetness with notes of cinnamon, caramel. Apart from their size – they are more than twice the size of Ajwa or Deglet Nour, Medjool dates have an unremarkable appearance. However, under their smoky brown, gently wrinkled skin, there is hidden gold: chewy, delicious and amber coloured fruit caramel.
Extensive care that pays off: how Medjool dates are cultivated
This popular date variety is grown far beyond the borders of Morocco, its country of origin – primarily in the USA and Israel, where our farmers live, as well as in Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and Jordan.
Medjool date palms arrived in the USA as small saplings in 1927, with six of the surviving trees still bearing fruit. This shows the extraordinary longevity and fertility of these desert plants, which are less parsimonious than you might expect: in addition to their hunger for sunlight, which can only be sated in the hottest regions of the world, date palms also have a powerful thirst. A fully-grown palm tree needs to consume three hundred litres of water to remain healthy and produce good quality dates.
Whether they are irrigated, or nourished from an oasis, date palms are not the kind of plants that farmers can leave to their own devices. After the shoots are planted from the branches, it typically takes seven years until the palms bear fruit for the first time. Even then, the palm crowns need to be thinned out regularly, the fertile areas need to be checked regularly and protected from birds by the use of netting. Each tree needs to be climbed up to twenty times per year, which is a strenuous exercise given the trees’ twenty-metre height – without even mentioning the harvest, which is carried out entirely by hand. However, the ripe dates are worth all the effort; scarcely any fruit is so fresh or succulent, nor so versatile, long-lasting, or satisfying. Dates have undoubtedly earned their nickname as the “bread of the desert.”
Power confectionery from the desert: why you’ve got to love Medjool dates
Medjool dates are so satisfying and filling thanks to their high carbohydrate content. This content is derived primarily from natural fruit sugar and fibre. This combination not only satisfies any slight hunger for a long time – it’s also a deliciously fulfilling snack. As such, Medjool dates make anything in the snack aisle look outdate.
Dates also score points thanks to their high levels of copper and potassium. Our bodies need copper to metabolise energy, as well as for the immune and nervous systems. High levels of potassium are the reason why dates are so popular with fitness enthusiasts, as it is essential for muscles to grow and function properly.
It’s clear that Medjool dates, though they are not exactly low in calories, comfortably beat any praline as a snack choice: they’re deliciously sweet and creamy, as well as raw, fat free, rich in nutrients, with no added sugar. What more could you want?
