What do white grapefruits have to do with our organic dates?

The question may arise as to how fresh citrus fruits fit into our range. The answer is: very good! These organic grapefruits, like our organic oranges, are a treat in their own right, but they are also neighbors of our dates and the reason for their quality. To understand why this is so, one has to know that there is an old tradition among date farmers that is dying out in times of modern agricultural technology and chemistry. Date palms do not grow here in monocultures that are easily accessible by machine, but in a close association of different plants and animals, which together form what we like to think of under the beautiful word "palm garden". Between the towering trunks of date palms, orange and grapefruit trees provide shade as donkeys and other animals graze among purple-flowered alfalfa clover that covers the floor of the date gardens.

This mixed culture is not only beautiful to look at. It is also to them that our organic Mazafati dates owe their outstanding quality, because it is the citrus trees and the scent of the essential oils contained in the fruits and leaves that keep the date palms away from those pests that classic palm monocultures often have to contend with . In fact, the dates consistently rank at the top in our strict quality controls and cause almost no waste. When we became aware of the underlying connection during a site visit with the farmers, we were thrilled. From then on, we couldn't let go of the desire to offer not only the dates from our partners, but also the full-bodied grapefruits from the date groves here.

The actual, white-fleshed fruit is hidden under a skin that is not too thick, which contains essential oil and is responsible for the wonderful scent of the fruit. Even when peeling, you have to be careful that no fruit acid accidentally splashes into your eyes, because the pulp is bursting with juice and valuable ascorbic acid, better known as vitamin C. The list of benefits is long: among other things, vitamin C protects the cells against oxidative stress, supports the nervous system, the energy metabolism and helps with tiredness and exhaustion.
